Let’s Pretend

There is an overwhelming truth – or I guess I should type Truth – about existence that is so huge, so powerful, so encompassing, that we humans spend every waking moment pretending in order to protect ourselves from its power…..or rather from what we perceive its power to be.

And by pretending, I mean actually inventing, cobbling together various masks and subterfuges that we can hide behind in order to stay out of the way of that Truth which we fear is so powerful that it might destroy us if we came out from hiding and embraced it…..now, WHY we are so scared of it is a mystery to me, because the Truth I write of seems such a fine and gentle thing, so warm and welcoming , that it is something we should all rush to embrace not hide from….however….we hide and hide and hide…pretend, pretend and pretend….cower behind our pretenses and think to ourselves “if we cannot see IT, then IT cannot see us.” Silly, I know.

Because the Truth is: well….so simple….yet so deep, that if we allow ourselves to fall into its moist embrace, we might drown. What we are hiding from is the simple secret power we all have, which is to be able to swim and stay afloat no matter the depth of the water…and even if we are submerged in it, we are equipped to breathe and thrive with an infinite pair of capable lungs….the Universe has prepared each of us to survive , and again thrive, in the Infinite.

We will not drown.
We cannot drown.
There is nothing to be afraid of.

But the sin – some say the Original Sin, that weakness the serpent convinced us of in the Garden -is the belief that somehow by being human and alive, we are capable of being destroyed…that since our bodies wear out and eventually die, that we ourselves die…but I do not believe that is so….. no, I do not believe that.

I believe that we are built for the long haul….and that we never truly die.
Our frail bodies might. But we do not.

I’ve been a theater actor almost my entire life, and in such a profession, i have become accustomed to changing roles, donning various costumes ,wigs and makeup to become as many different people as I might get fortunate enough to play. Within each role, there exists the essential Evalyn…the “me” that is the core instrument capable of convincing other people that the characters I play are the truth in each moment….(not the Truth).

So the idea that in our mortal lives we are actually playing different parts, choosing different character traits, defenses and attributes to act out our individual dramas , or comedies as the case may be, is not such a far-fetched idea . …that beneath the skins, the pretenses, of all those different characters we ask ourselves to play throughout our life is the True, the essential spirit in each of us.

So, the Truth I’ve been hinting at?
That the Universe is composed solely and powerfully of the creative power of Love, of Creativity itself…of positive manifestation of all that will be good in the cosmos….the Truth is we never actually die….we merely change costumes and dance with the next partner on our dance cards.

We never truly disappear….we change.
Such a freeing idea.

Why we are so afraid of that?
Beats me.
Maybe “freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose”….and maybe we think if we have nothing left to lose, we somehow have lost it all….when in my reality, winning is all there is to it, and all there ever will be.

I feel I was ‘divinely’ guided to read this piece this afternoon. How inspiring, how lovely, how true.
