I have already written this poem
More than a million times
Over more than a million years.
I wrote it when we watched the suave diplodicus together
As she stepped so elegantly into the lukewarm marsh
The steam rising
Around her graceful neck
I wrote one when the ice covered everything
And another one when it did not
I wrote you one when we were multicellular bacteria
Swaying on the ocean floor
I wrote it about your sense of smell
Which was my own.
The only sense we had
But it was enough.
It was more than enough.
O, how happy we were then
Waiting together for the world to start
When the fishes came I wrote you an ode
When we crawled on to shore, I crafted a sonnet
Now that we have been together here for
More than a couple of years
Decades in the current time
The small calendar, the tiny clock
I will write you another one.
This here is it.
Its not my best work
But I promise you this –
I will write you a better one later.
