When love leaves

When love leaves
the ink dries and contracts are shredded
We feign indifference
The departing formerly beloved means it
Because the opposite of love is not hate
it is indifference
Let us hope that compassion fatigue
is not contagious
We are taught to forgive
I do not
That is permission to re-injure
When love leaves
the charred body drops to the ground
Burned from the inside out
Blood boils, trust dies
When love leaves
I lose it’s number
If love is eternal, so is cruelty
When love leaves
a victim remains
The wound does not heal, scar tissue forms
Trust atrophies
And it is so very hard to love again.
